Cette sélection pour webSYNradio est une promenade à travers la dernière année de mon écoute pour la préparation de mon nouvel album intitulé Rituels. Je me suis immergé dans une multitude d’influences : musique religieuse, chants de guérison, méditation, musique taoïste et bouddhiste, indonésienne et chinoise, perse et grecque et toute l’extraordinaire variété de musiques rituelles qui existaient sur l’ancienne route de la Soie reliant l’Est à l’Ouest.
Cette intense période d’écoute a également inclus un long voyage dans la musique de Luc Ferrari et Giacinto Scelsi et la façon dont ils ont utilisé les influences de la musique traditionnelle et rituelle dans leur composition électronique et acoustique.
Cette période a également impliqué de nombreuses heures d’errance en Australie, faites d’enregistrement dans les forêts tropicales et autour de Melbourne et beaucoup de temps consacré à l’écoute de ces paysages Australiens uniques.
La combinaison de ces trois influences m’a conduit à l’enregistrement de mes Rituels et cette playlist est comme une tapisserie de ces nombreuses influences avec mes propres pièces tissées dans la trame.
Le terme rituel peut s’entendre au sens large, et dans mon exploration de ces vastes régions de traditions anciennes et plus récentes, on retrouve à la fois l’idée d’une cérémonie intérieure et imaginaire.
This collection is a wander through the last year of my listening in preparing my new CD Rituals. I immersed my self in a combination of listening to ritual music: religious, healing, meditational, Taoist and Buddhist, Indonesian and Chinese, Persian and Greek and the range of ritual music that existed along the ancient trading route from the ancient east to west – The Silk Road.
This period of listening also included a long journey into the music of Luc Ferrari and Giacinto Scelsi and the ways in which they used the influences of traditional and ritual music in their electronic and acoustic music.
This period also involved many hours of wandering in Australia recording in the rain forests and around Melbourne and time spent listening to the unique landscape around Australia.
The combination of these three influences led to my recording Rituals and this playlist is a tapestry of the many influences on these recording with my pieces woven into the fabric.
The term Ritual is a flexible one, in the sense I am using the term, and both ceremonial as well as internal and imagined rituals are invoked in this personal walk through the vast area of older and more recent traditions in ritual sound and music.

David Shea est un compositeur américain qui travaille avec des combinaisons de sons acoustiques et électroniques et les traditions de l’avant-garde, la musique concrète, l’improvisation, l’art sonore et les musiques rituelles de l’Est et de l’Ouest. Travaillant avec des samples et de l’électronique au sein de formations de musiciens, il a enregistré depuis les années 90 près de 25 albums solos et collectifs (principalement sur les labels de John Zorn, Tzadik, et SubRosa). Il réside actuellement à Melbourne en Australie .
Originaire de New York, il a d’abord évolué dans les années 80 et 90 sur cette scène musicale et il a été membre de plusieurs formations de John Zorn en tant que turntablist et sampler. Il a beaucoup composé pour le cinéma (peut-être le plus connu est Dial History), la danse (Karole Armitage , entre autres), des performances vidéo et a créé de nombreuses installations sonores ( tels que la production de l’Ircam pour Sonic Process spectacle du Centre Pompidou, intégré à la collection permanente) . Il a fait des tournées dans toute l’Europe aux Etats-Unis et en Asie en solo ou en formation. Il a vécu à Bruxelles de 2000 à 2005.
Il partage actuellement son temps entre la composition, l’enregistrement (field recording), des conférences sur des sujets croisés à l’Université de Melbourne et l’ université des arts VCA et il travaille actuellement sur une collection d’œuvres de piano et une tournée prochaine sur le continent chinois …
David Shea is a composer who works with combinations of acoustic and electronic sound and the traditions of the classical avant-garde, music concrete, improvisation, sound art and eastern and western ritual musics. Working primarily with combinations of samplers and electronics with ensembles of musicians he has recorded around 25 cds of solo and ensemble work (on John Zorns label Tzadik and the Sub Rosa label mainly) through the 90s and 2000s and currently resides in Melbourne Australia.
Originally from New York he worked in the 80s and 90s in the downtown music scene and was a member in many of the ensembles of John Zorn as a turntable and sampler player. He has composed extensively for film (perhaps best known is the film Dial History), dance ( Karole Armitage among others) , video performance and has created numerous sound installations (such as the IRCAM production for the Centre Pompidou’s Sonic Process show and in the permanent collection). He has toured throughout Europe the US and Asia with his solo and ensemble work since the early 90s and lived in Brussels from 2000 till 2005.
He currently divides his time between composing, recording , doing field recordings, lecturing on cross discipline subjects at Melbourne University and the VCA college of the arts and is currently working on a collection of piano works and a tour on the Chinese mainland …
